Andy Cohen Talks Amy Sedaris Friendship and Why She's a 'Lot of Fun' as His Holiday Radio Cohost (Exclusive)

Andy Cohen likes to party with Amy Sedaris.

The two friends joined forces in New York on Thursday, Dec. 19, to host SiriusXM’s 10th annual Radio Andy Holiday Hangout, a two-hour live broadcast in which they talk and answer questions from listeners — a decades-old tradition born out of Cohen’s desire to Sedaris went on the air.

“When I started Radio Andy, Amy was one of the first people I [tried to get] doing her own radio show, and she was typical Amy, like, ‘Oh, I couldn’t, I wouldn’t know what to say, whatever’, Real Housewives the producer, 56, tells PEOPLE of Sedaris, 63, who he adds is “so funny at first glance.”

Although the whole radio show “was too much for her,” Cohen recalls asking her if she would like to do a one-off broadcast for the holidays, “and she loved the idea,” he says.

Since then, the annual holiday hangout has been a hit with fans and fun for both hosts, who have adapted and weathered snowstorms and more over the years to ensure the show goes on.

“We’ve done it in a lot of permutations, and nobody makes me laugh harder than Amy,” Cohen says. “You never know where the conversation will go. It’s two hours long. It’s so much fun.”

Recorded in front of a small audience at the SiriusXM Fishbowl Studios in Manhattan, fans come from all over the country to attend the live broadcast in person, while others call seeking advice on anything from holiday entertainment to personal relationships.

“I love doing this show with Andy every year. It’s really funny. It gets you in the Christmas spirit. And I love answering people’s questions,” says Sedaris, who especially enjoys “those relationships — you know, people who have problems with their parents.”

Cohen is pretty busy with fatherhood these days, Housewives duties, his talk show Watch what’s happening live! and co-hosts CNN’s New Year’s Eve with Anderson Cooper, but says radio is especially “fun” because the format is “very free.”

“Everything is allowed,” he explains. “The virtual community we’ve built on Radio Andy over the last 10 years is just amazing. I’m always amazed when I go around and people say, ‘I listen to you and John every day [Hill],’ and people really connect and it’s a place where they can really let go.”
