News about Andy Elliott

In last weekend’s 32-man clash in London, Andrew Elliott’s home advantage proved crucial. The former Lakehead University wrestler and current Adrenaline Training Center wrestler defeated Bryan Fedynszyn in a championship match to complete his perfect day in capturing the 2012 32-man title.

Adrenaline’s Andrew Elliott was the last survivor in the 32-man showdown.

The activity was carried out as part of the Sports and Recreation exhibition inside the Agriplex at the Western Fair. Elliott won a five minute match against the larger Fedynszyn that required sudden death overtime to decide the winner using a tremendous combination of speed, power and shrewd technique.

Elliott managed to secure a strong pitch and holding position for a sudden death overtime win. Elliott, who is currently trained by James Haourt and Rowan Cunningham at the Adrenaline Training Center, really deserved the win. Ironically, Elliott defeated the much shorter master of He Haourt in the semifinals.

Elliott and I had a little chat after the incident. “I have a wrestling history; I wrestled in high school and in college at Lakehead University. In fact, one of my former teammates from my college took first place in the Gi division.

“John Fraser taught me a bit about mixed martial arts since high school and now I’m back here at Adrenaline in London.”

Elliott trains hard, as evidenced by his performance Sunday against John “The Haggis Basher” Fraser, one of the best mixed martial artists this nation has to offer. Elliott has positioned himself well to excel in the sport in the future by working with top athletes at Adrenaline in London and Fraser in Sarnia. Elliott responded emphatically when I asked if this was the toughest test for a competitor of his caliber:

“Everything is unique; it is difficult to compare them. Wrestling has extremely tough events, but today’s competitors were outstanding. The final here was tough; I had to fight for every takedown, and even if I did, I had to defend my arm because it threatened to choke me.

The Showdown, which has been held three times, is a special competition because it is an “open weight challenge”, while all other competitions are organized according to weight classes. Each weight class had a semifinalist, with Elliott (165 pounds), Fedynszyn (215 pounds) and Dave Knowles.
