The 6’5″ player from the University of Oklahoma has committed to play for Team USA in this year’s FIBA World Cup, according to The Athletic’s Joe Vardon and Shams Charania.
Reaves will join fellow youngsters Anthony Edwards, an All-Star guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Bobby Portis, a wing/center for the Milwaukee Bucks, on the club, according to Vardon and Charania.
USA Basketball director Grant Hill, a Hall of Fame forward, head coach Steve Kerr, also recently defeated by the Golden State Warriors, and general manager Sean Ford, who has been with USA Basketball since 1999, round out the 12-man roster.
On August 3, Team USA’s training camp will begin in Las Vegas, which is just a short drive from Reaves. Starting on August 7, the team will play exhibition games for several weeks. On August 26, the official tournament of the World Cup begins against the New Zealand team.
According to Vardon and Charania, the 25-year-old Reaves fits perfectly with Team USA’s concept for its wing players because he is a quality point guard who plays with a certain size, defensive ability and outside shooting touch.
In 16 playoff games for LA, all starts, Reaves averaged 16.9 points on 464/.443/.895 shooting, 4.6 assists and 4.4 rebounds. He will be a restricted free agent this summer; however, the Lakers are expected to match any offer made to him.
