As NBC has been accused of covering up allegations of sexual abuse by former “Today” host Matt Lauer, MSNBC host Chris Hayes addressed the allegations on his show Monday night. With this, he sent a strong message to the network management.
MSNBC’s Chris Hayes delivered a strong message to NBC management in response to allegations that they withheld Ronan Farrow’s coverage of Harvey Weinstein.
After being accused of “sexually inappropriate behavior” at work, Lauer was infamously fired from the network in 2017. Lauer’s accuser, former MSNBC producer Brooke Nevils, is named for the first time in a new book, “Catch & Kill,” by investigative reporter Ronan Farrow.
The book also exposes what Farrow calls a massive cover-up by NBC officials to prevent him from covering the alleged sexual assault of Harvey Weinstein while working for the network, in part because they were terrified of Weinstein and his entourage.
In the book, Farrow also claims that executives were concerned that NBC’s coverage of the allegations against Lauer would lead to Lauer being the subject of questions about his own conduct.
After NBC dismissed its months-long investigation into the allegations against Weinstein, saying it was insufficiently substantiated to air, Farrow left the network at the end of 2017.
Instead, he published his explosive article in the New Yorker, which, along with a separate investigation into Weinstein by The New York Times, led to the latter’s downfall and led to the #MeToo movement.
In a far-reaching memo to NBC staff, NBC News president Noah Oppenheimer called Farrow’s claim that the network removed its reporting on Weinstein to protect Lauer a “conspiracy theory” and attacked heated claims that NBC tried to cover up Nevils’ allegations against Matt Lauer and forced accusers into confidential settlements with the network.
Most of MSNBC’s hosts have largely avoided commenting on the issue until now. NBC questions The Hollywood Reporter’s claim that Farrow is “blacklisted” for appearing on the network. However, Hayes took a big risk in using his position to praise Farrow for his courageous reporting and make a strong statement to his own bosses.
“Everywhere you look, the complicated and damaging path of least resistance is there. Hayes responded to Farrow’s claims that NBC was “walking slowly” and ultimately removed the Weinstein story, saying, “Damn, I feel like it’s upsetting that my news outlet is engaged in a very public debate about his actions.”
