Faces of Death, a remake of the iconic 1978 horror film produced by Legendary, will star Stranger Things’ Dacre Montgomery and Barbie Ferreira, one of the breakout stars of HBO’s Euphoria.
The reimagining is written and directed by Isa Mazzei and Daniel Goldhaber, the duo behind 2018 psychological thrillers Cam and How to Blow Up a Pipeline.

A movie released just as home video became popular, Faces featured the idea of a pathologist investigating gruesome ways to die using footage supposedly collected from around the world. Although most of the death sequences were staged, the film’s producers got exactly the reaction they wanted: outrage, disgust, a ban (although not in 52 countries as the film’s creators claim), and, of course, anger.
Although the initial film was released in theaters, it wasn’t until the 1980s that it was released on VHS and gained cult status as copies were secretly rented, given away, and worn out by repeat viewings. The original film was kept in circulation by Illinois-based MPI.
Using a 21st century perspective, the filmmakers want to recreate the madness.
“We are very happy to use Faces of Death as a jumping off point for this exploration of cycles of violence and how they are perpetuated online,” Mazzei and Goldhaber said in a statement. Faces of Death was one of the first viral videos. Cory Kaplan is co-producing with Rick Benattar, who is also serving as executive producer.
Before leaving the acclaimed, transgressive drama Euphoria after two seasons, Ferreira played high school student Kat Hernandez on the show. She has appeared in several films, including the Jordan Peele horror film Nope and the HBO travelogue Unpregnant. She recently finished filming the thriller House of Spoils for Blumhouse and Amazon Prime Video.
Due to his role as Billy Hargrove, Max Mayfield’s half-brother in two seasons of Stranger Things, Montgomery became famous in a certain age group. He also played television producer Steve Binder in Baz Lurhmann’s Elvis.
