Dervla Kirwan made her television debut in 1990 in The Lilac Bus, with Stephanie Beacham, and in 1988 in Troubles, based on the book by Maeve Binchy. Her role as Bernadette Kennedy in the 1991 BBC Scottish drama A Time To Dance was her major career breakthrough, bringing her huge popularity and attention. She appeared in Casualty and The Good Sweetheart opposite Nicholas Lyndhurst.
From 1996 to 1998, she played Assumpta Fitzgerald in Ballykissangle, which lasted 23 episodes. She repeated the character in The Vicar of Dibley, a British comedy, and especially in Father Ted. Similarly, in 1999, she was cast as a single mother of two daughters in the BBC Christmas drama The Greatest Store in the World.
In the BBC drama Hearts and Bones, she played Emma Rose alongside Amanda Holden, Hugo Speer, Damian Lewis and Sarah Parish. The show lasted for two seasons.
