Eric Holder News

At a symposium in Washington on Wednesday, former attorney general Eric Holder claimed that Donald Trump is pursuing “dangerous” criminal justice reform plans that overlook the increasing bipartisan consensus.

Eric Holder deems the administration’s approach to crime as risky and demoralising.

At the National Law Enforcement Summit on Crime, Holder, the nation’s first black attorney general, pressed Trump and his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, on recent administration actions that amounted to a return to the tough-on-crime strategies of the 1990s. Holder was joined by police chiefs, elected officials, and other advocates in this effort.

He continued, saying it was “disappointing, dispiriting, and ultimately dangerous” that the Trump administration had decided to bring back measures like mandatory minimum sentences for drug offences without violence.

Holder claimed that “this administration’s lack of judgement will return this country to a discredited past.”

The justice department has taken various actions under Sessions’ leadership to reverse policies from the Obama administration that were intended to combat racial unfairness in the criminal justice system.

The attorney general ordered federal prosecutors to “charge and pursue the most serious, readily provable offence” in May, which supported tougher mandatory minimum punishments.

Additionally, Sessions revoked a directive from Barack Obama that instructed the justice department to employ less private prisons. Private prisons were being phased out by the Obama administration, which had made the case that they were more expensive and less secure.

The Obama-era restrictions on supplying police departments with military equipment, which were used during the 2014 protests in Ferguson, Missouri following the killing of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer, have also been reversed under the Trump administration.

As part of a contentious reintroduction to civil forfeiture practises that have been outlawed in certain jurisdictions, law enforcement officers have also been given expanded ability to seize assets from suspects even if they have not been found guilty of a crime.

Holder described the actions as “ideologically motivated” and used the situation as a flashpoint in the discussion of racial profiling and criminal justice reform.
