Jacob Degrom News

The ulnar collateral ligament in Texans star pitcher Jacob deGrom’s pitching elbow will be repaired with Tommy John surgery, Rangers general manager Chris Young said Tuesday. DeGrom will have surgery next week, and from then on, he’ll likely miss more than just the first two months of 2024.

“This is terrible. According to the Dallas Morning News, deGrom told reporters, ‘It’s not ideal.’ But now at least we know what it is. I’ll try to get back before the end of the year to put things right.”

Last summer, the Rangers signed deGrom to a five-year, $185 million contract. The Tommy John surgery clause in that deal now gives Texas a sixth club option, worth between $20 million and $37 million, depending on prize voting and gates. There are more and more conditions for Tommy John surgery, as is Luis Castillo’s contract with the Seattle Mariners.

Before leaving his April 28 start against the New York Yankees with a stiff forearm, a common precursor to Tommy John surgery, deGrom, 34, had made six starts and pitched 30 1/3 innings this season. In an effort to rejoin the team, deGrom had just started throwing bullpen sessions, but appeared to have new soreness in his elbow.

DeGrom will undergo the second Tommy John procedure of his career. In October 2010, while he was still a minor league prospect for the New York Mets, he underwent his first elbow surgery. Although the second Tommy John surgery is usually more risky than the first and requires a longer period of rehabilitation, it is less risky now than it was five or ten years ago.

Take for example the aforementioned Eovaldi. Eovaldi has been one of the best pitchers in baseball since the Rangers signed him to a two-year, $34 million contract last winter. He pitched a league-record 80 1/3 innings with a 2.24 ERA. In 2007 he underwent his first Tommy John surgery and two years later in 2016.

DeGrom dominated baseball as a pitcher from 2015 to 2019, compiling a 2.61 ERA with 1,111 strikeouts in 961 1/3 innings. DeGrom’s two-year standout reel from 2018-19 was historically impressive: 2.05 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 524 strikeouts in 421 innings, and he helped the Mets win two NL Cy Young titles. He also finished third in the 2020 National League Cy Young voting.

But DeGrom’s last three seasons were hampered by injuries. In 2021, elbow problems limited him to just 15 starts and the season ended in July. His debut in the 2022 season was delayed until August due to a shoulder problem. DeGrom only made 32 starts between 2021 and 2023, when he was 33 and 35, due to a series of arm injuries, but they were all good starts.
