Jason Kidd was picked by the Dallas Mavericks in the 1994 NBA draft. During his rookie season, he averaged 11.7 points, 7.7 assists and 5.4 rebounds. He was then selected to play in the 1996 All-Star Game. He was with the Mavericks until 1996 when he was transferred to the Phoenix Suns.
In the 1997-98 season, the Suns advanced to sixteen games. The following season, he averaged 10.8 assists. During the 2000–01 season, Kidd dealt with personal issues and was unable to focus on his career. He was with the Phoenix Suns until 2001.
Kidd joined the New Jersey Nets in 2001. The Nets won the Eastern Conference title under his leadership. Their record in the 2002-03 season was 49-33. He renewed his six-year contract with the Nets.
