News about Jennifer Jones Lee
Jennifer Jones, 90, the popular sinner in Hollywood melodramas such as “Love Is a Wonderful Thing” and “Duel in the Sun,” who won an Oscar for her portrayal of the saint in “The Song of Bernadette,” died Thursday at her home in Malibu, California.
She was the surviving wife of Norton Simon, an industrialist and respected art collector.
Most reports claim producer David O. Selznick, Jones’s second husband and one of Hollywood’s most powerful businessmen, is responsible for her career decline. He tried to strip her of the eccentric charm of hers that she initially captivated viewers to turn her into what film critic David Thomson derisively called “the greatest actress in the world.”
Few actresses have made a more dazzling debut than Jones, who enjoyed widespread media coverage for her groundbreaking role in “The Song of Bernadette” (1943). She played a peasant girl from 19th century France who had visions of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes.
In her prime, Jones was one of cinema’s greatest beauties: a stunning brunette with a silky voice and dreamy gaze. Among her 27 films, she is best known for playing the ghostly beauty who seduces Joseph Cotten in “Portrait of Jennie” (1948) and as a master con artist in John Huston’s “The Devil’s Victory” (1953), in which Humphrey Bogart played an explorer racing to find uranium riches in Africa.
Most movie experts blame her long relationship with producer Selznick, whom she married in 1949, after which he cast her in meticulous literary adaptations such as “Madame Bovary” (1949) and “A Farewell to Arms” (1957). Selznick ruled her out of major roles, including ones that helped land Julie Harris and Eva Marie Saint in “East of Eden” and “On the Waterfront.”
