News about Jim Balsillie
In the early 1980s, Balsillie began working as a chartered accountant at Coopers & Lybrand, now PwC. Rick Brock, owner of the small technology company Sutherland-Schultz in Cambridge, Ontario, was someone he met when he was a student. Balsillie returned to Canada after graduating in 1989 and joined Sutherland-Schultz, where he eventually rose to the position of executive vice president.
Later, when this corporation was bought by another in 1992, he was forced to leave. Brock proposed using his severance pay to invest in Research in Motion, a small company that was once a supplier to Sutherland-Schultz, during acquisition negotiations. Through RIM, this would mark the beginning of a long-term collaboration.
Until 2012, he shared the co-CEO role with Mike Lazaridis. As Co-CEO of RIM, maker of the BlackBerry smartphone, Balsillie helped grow the company to become one of the most respected companies in Canada.
Engineers by training, Balsillie and Lazaridis met while working at the University of Waterloo in Canada. Their initial business objective was the creation and marketing of communication software for POS terminals, but they later decided to focus on the creation of wireless communication equipment.
One of its initial offerings, the BlackBerry, debuted in 1999 and quickly rose to the top of the global smartphone market. RIM became one of Canada’s leading technology companies thanks to the success of the company and of Balsillie and Lazaridis.
Early in his career, Balsillie was known for his strong work ethic and ability to spot new business opportunities. He is characterized as a determined and ambitious person with a deep knowledge of technology and a clear vision of the direction of the mobile industry. His persistence and perseverance made BlackBerry one of the most successful and important companies in the world.
After leaving the company in 2012, Balsillie became involved in a number of charitable initiatives and investments. Research center that prioritizes governance, the economy and international relations, he is a founding partner of the Center for Innovation in International Governance. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Royal Ontario Museum.
Balsillie is known for his charitable initiatives in addition to his work at RIM. He was a co-founder of the Balsillie School of International Affairs, a graduate program that focuses on international relations, and the Center for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), a think tank that focuses on global governance and politics.
He also serves as president of the Council of Canadian Innovators (CCI), a non-profit group that represents the interests of Canada’s top technology companies.
