Joe Johnson started his career as a college football player. He averaged 16.0 points as a freshman at Arkansas in 1999. He was named All-American in his sophomore season. From 2000 to 2001, he played in 30 games and averaged 14.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists.
He was the Boston Celtics’ tenth overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft. He started 33 times and averaged 6.3 points in the first half of his debut season. However, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns in February 2002. From 2002 to 2005, he was a member of the Phoenix Suns, where he averaged 39.3%.
