News about Lindsey Halligan

John Rowley, James Trusty and Lindsey Halligan, lawyers for former President Donald Trump, met with special counsel Jack Smith and federal prosecutors from the Justice Department at 10 a.m. Monday, according to two people familiar with the situation.

In the midst of investigating documents, Trump’s lawyers meet with the Justice Department’s special counsel.

The meeting with top federal law enforcement came weeks after Trump’s lawyers requested it. After just under two hours in the Chief Justice’s building, the former president’s legal team declined to comment on their conversation outside.

CBS News cameras watched Trump’s legal team enter the Justice Department. Lawyers for the former president said nothing when they entered the facility in Washington, DC. Attorney General Merrick Garland was reportedly absent from the meeting between the three lawyers and the department, according to a person familiar with the matter.

According to two people familiar with the investigation, Trump’s legal team is unhappy with the way Justice Department officials have recently handled attorney-client cases and is likely to raise those issues during Monday’s meeting, particularly as prosecutors discuss related matters before a grand jury.

A federal judge ruled earlier this year that Trump’s lawyer must appear before a Washington DC grand jury investigating the former president’s withholding of classified documents.

In the past, attorney Evan Corcoran has refused to speak to investigators about his conversations with Trump, citing attorney-client confidentiality issues. A source previously told CBS News last week that prosecutors in the special counsel’s office wanted to question Corcoran about an alleged call he allegedly had with Trump on June 24, 2022, when investigators were trying to gather documents at Trump’s home and security footage from Mar-a-Lago.

The special counsel’s office has asked DC Circuit Chief Judge Beryl Howell to throw out Corcoran’s confidentiality claims and compel him to testify against Trump on the grounds that conversations between the two sides’ attorneys may have facilitated the criminal conduct. According to the sources, Howell’s secret warrant only partially granted that request and ordered that Corcoran’s testimony be included in the so-called “criminal fraud exception” with respect to a certain set of investigations.

The appeals court upheld Howell’s decision and denied the former president’s request to quash Corcoran’s testimony. Judge James Boasberg, who ruled earlier this year that former Vice President Mike Pence must appear before a grand jury in another investigation by special counsel, replaced Howell as chief judge in DC federal court.
