Mark Meadows News

Mark Meadows, Donald Trump’s former chief of staff, appeared before a federal grand jury as part of special counsel Jack Smith’s ongoing investigation into the former president, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

It’s unclear whether Meadows testified as part of the special counsel’s investigation into whether Trump may have mishandled classified materials after leaving the White House or as part of his investigation into attempts to rig the 2020 presidential election.

Without commenting on whether Meadows testified before a grand jury or in any other proceeding, Meadows’ attorney George Terwilliger said in a statement that Meadows “retained an obligation to tell the truth where he is legally required to do so.” A spokeswoman for the special counsel’s office declined to comment.

The grand jury hearing Meadow attended was first reported by the New York Times. Meadows is believed to be a key witness in Smith’s investigation. The judge rejected Trump’s claims of executive privilege, forcing him to appear before a grand jury and unseal the documents.

In early May, a source close to Trump’s legal team told CNN that the president’s lawyers had not spoken with Meadows and his staff and were unaware of his activities in the investigation.

According to many people familiar with Trump’s legal teams at the time, Meadows’ reluctance angered the more outspoken lawyers for the other defendants. In particular, they cited a $900,000 payment made by Trump’s political action organization Save America to the McGuireWoods law firm late last year.

Although Meadows has refrained from answering questions from the House Select Committee and the criminal investigation in Fulton County, Georgia, her testimony and records have been eagerly sought in numerous investigations related to the Jan. 6 and 2020 elections.

Earlier this year, an Atlanta grand jury revealed that Meadows had testified but refused to answer questions, invoking his Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination and other privileges.
