The elite equestrian athlete-turned-trainer’s trial was held in April 2022, and one of two attorneys who represented him was Chris Deininger. Chris Deininger argued that any further disclosure of Barisone’s mental health information would violate Barisone’s rights under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, a federal law that gives individuals control over their health information. He noted that Barisone’s acquittal should prevent any imminent disclosure of his client’s medical history.

Judge Stephen Taylor was surprised by the lack of protest from defense attorneys when Barisone’s psychiatric records were “released throughout the United States and who knows where else, internationally” after hearing arguments Wednesday in state Superior Court in Morristown.
In his denial, Taylor added: “Now I’m a bit taken aback by your concern. There was no objection to his deep mental history, child abuse issues, despair, or live broadcasts.
Much attention was paid in the media to Barisone’s achievements as a top dressage rider and later as a highly sought-after trainer, with CBS airing an article about the “48-hour” trial. Law & Crime Network also provided live coverage of the 11-day trial.
In August 2019, Barisone, 58, was accused of shooting his tenant, Lauren Kanarek, twice at his posh Long Valley property. He allegedly shot Robert Goodwin, his fiancée, but missed. Due to the rare mental disability that existed at the time of the incident, the jury found Barisone not guilty of attempted murder by insanity and that he did not realize that what he did was illegal.
After a series of testimonies from professionals, including doctors who claimed that Barisone believed that Kanarek and Goodwin were trying to kill him, Barisone’s mental state came under scrutiny.

According to medical experts consulted by the defense, Barisone suffered from delusions of beliefs that affected his thinking and made him fear for his life and become paranoid about the shooting. Doctors claimed that due to her acute detachment from reality as a result of his mental illness, he was declared legally insane when he took his revolver out of the safe, drove to his farm, and shot Kanarek twice.
Kanarek was shot twice in the upper chest and placed in a medically induced coma to repair extensive damage to his left lung during the 11-day trial. During that time, she presented her own emotional evidence.

After being found not guilty, Barisone spent time at the Ann Klein Forensic Center in Trenton before being transferred to Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital, where he remains today. When a defendant is acquitted of all charges, he is often ordered to receive treatment and is called to court periodically for updates. At this point, the judge decides whether or not to allow the person to rejoin society.
After the trial, Barisone appeared in court for the first time in September. The judge expressed concern that he might not be ready to be released, but Barisone agreed to discuss his medical condition on Wednesday.
Although the hearing was postponed until the end of April, Barisone and the three doctors were scheduled to appear on Wednesday. Taylor noted Wednesday that Barisone’s last appearance saw him clean-shaven and sporting a new haircut, a stark contrast to his rehearsal appearance when he appeared withdrawn and frail.
