News about Robert Hanssen

Robert Hanssen, the legendary FBI double agent who gave Russia access to some of America’s most sensitive secrets in the 1980s and 1990s, died Monday at a maximum-security facility, according to corrections officials.

Robert Hanssen, the FBI’s ‘most destructive’ double agent, has died.

In 1985, Hanssen made himself available to Soviet military intelligence, offering to sell diamonds and large sums of money in exchange for government secrets and the names of American spies operating in the Soviet and Russian administrations.

He was able to conceal his activities by allegedly investigating Moscow agents in the United States, as he worked for the FBI’s New York counterintelligence division, which was tasked with tracking foreign spies.

On February 18, 2001, he was finally arrested while exchanging messages with his Russian contacts in the Virginia suburbs near Washington.

A year later, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Hanssen, 79, was discovered unconscious early Monday at the maximum-security US prison in Florence, Colorado, and later pronounced dead, according to a prison statement.

The agency called him “the most destructive spy in FBI history.” Hanssen first worked as a police officer in Chicago before joining the FBI in 1976. Nine years later, he joined the New York bureau’s counterintelligence division, where agents spent much time tracking down and trying to recruit Soviet officials to the UN.

Instead, he quickly offered his services to the opposition under the guise of “Ramón García”, with even his handlers unaware of his true identity.

When he was discovered, he was considered the most destructive spy ever to leak American secrets to a foreign country, as he turned over thousands of top-secret American documents to the Soviets and then the Russians.

These include the names of US sources in Moscow, software to track espionage cases and US preparations for nuclear war. One such source was Dmitri Polyakov, often known as “Tophat,” a Soviet commander who passed Soviet secrets to the United States during the 1960s and 1980s.

In 1986 Poljakov was arrested and a few years later he was murdered. Hanssen collected more than $1.4 million ($2.1 million) in cash and diamonds for his betrayals, which are said to have been motivated by money and intrigue rather than principle.
