News about Ross Coulthart

Veteran investigative reporter Ross Coulthart has resigned from the Seven Network’s flagship current affairs show following a newsroom dispute.

Last month, Coulthart stepped in to stop a physical altercation between Sunday Night executive producer Mark Llewellyn and another producer.

According to sources last night, Coulthart told Seven executives last Friday that he was leaving the show.

Insiders say Coulthart, a longtime friend of EP Llewellyn, who is currently on leave from the show and reportedly suspended, was upset by an incident in which Llewellyn allegedly pinned producer Paul Waterhouse against a wall at Seven’s offices after a fight over a story. Yesterday, while a Seven spokesperson was seeking an official comment from the chain’s bosses.

It is claimed that old friends Coulthart and Llewellyn were concerned about the mental health of an anxious Llewellyn in the months leading up to the incident. Coulthart is a well-known novelist and a former colleague of Llewellyn’s on the Nine Network.

According to a TV source last night, “Llewellyn has been under stress for a long time trying to cope with the constraints of a tight budget and the inability of Sevens bosses to greenlight stories that needed to be released quickly.”

Ross had been sharing his concern for Mark with people for a while when he saw it all come to a head.

On October 29, as the board was across town in the Entertainment Quarter celebrating their 2014 success and announcing their 2015 schedule, tensions finally erupted at the Sunday Night Eveleigh office. Coulthart, a black belt in martial arts, was reportedly disheartened by the way the incident was handled after he personally got involved.

Coulthart, a former journalist for Nine Network’s A Current Affair and Sunday, was said to have lost faith in reliable sources last night.

They went on to say that the Sunday Night crew is still awaiting word from management on whether or not Llewellyn will be replaced. Nick Chan, his employer, has yet to address the staff.

When he was discovered, he was considered the most destructive spy ever to leak American secrets to a foreign country, as he turned over thousands of top-secret American documents to the Soviets and then the Russians.

These include the names of US sources in Moscow, software to track espionage cases and US preparations for nuclear war. One such source was Dmitri Polyakov, often known as “Tophat,” a Soviet commander who passed Soviet secrets to the United States during the 1960s and 1980s.

In 1986 Poljakov was arrested and a few years later he was murdered. Hanssen collected more than $1.4 million ($2.1 million) in cash and diamonds for his betrayals, which are said to have been motivated by money and intrigue rather than principle.
