The Winnetka, Illinois estate was the center of the classic holiday film in which eight-year-old Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, is mistakenly left home alone after his family went on Christmas vacation.
McKenna previously told PEOPLE that the property — which features a fully equipped gym, a state-of-the-art movie theater, an indoor sports court with a 3-point line and a heated three-car garage — is “a rare legend that lives up to its hype in every way.”
“This house has it all. It’s iconic, full of modern amenities and in one of the best neighborhoods in the country,” she says.

Another former resident, Laura Abendshien, lived in the house while the film was being made and shared her unique experience on a British morning show This morning.
“We stayed in the house for almost the entire period, which was about four or five months,” she said. “To avoid appearing on the screen, we’d have to crawl around the window from room to room.”
She also recalled how the cast, including Culkin, hung out around the house between scenes.
“They would spend time at the house when they weren’t filming their scenes. Macaulay Culkin used my study room with his teacher, and his brother [Keiran]he didn’t shoot that much, so he would just hang out in my room,” she recalled.
“We saw something special happening, but we didn’t anticipate how big a hit it would be,” she said of the reception for the family comedy that spawned two sequels.
“It was very surreal when the movie came out and suddenly it was the holiday season in 1990 and there was an endless line of cars and people wanted to see the house and take pictures and it was very new to us, but we grew to love it and we shared the magic of the movie .”

Originally built in 1921, the 9,126-square-foot property sits behind wrought-iron gates on a tree-lined street.
The interior of the home will not look so familiar to fans alone at home however. The rooms were too small to accommodate a full film crew, so the production built a full two-story sound stage inside a nearby abandoned school building.
After renovations in 2018, the home now features a family room with high ceilings and French doors that open to the backyard. There is also a chef’s kitchen, a second family room, a screened-in porch with a wood-burning fireplace. The space is ready for a family the size of the McCallisters, thanks to two laundry rooms upstairs and downstairs and a mud room.
