Career
Gary Barnett served as an assistant coach at the University of Missouri under coach Al Onofrio in 1969 and lasted until 1971. After graduating, he coached at Aeronautical Academy High School in Colorado Springs, where he won the conference championship and reached the semifinals in 1980 and 1981. He coached for 11 years, including nine as head coach.
Gary then took over as head coach at Fort Lewis University in Durango, Colorado, but two years later moved to Colorado to work as an assistant coach to Bill McCartney. He won his first and only national championship as his team’s offensive coordinator in the 1991 Orange Bowl.
Gary became Northwestern’s head coach in 1991 and, after years of failure, led the team to its best season yet.
