“I remember everything.”
One of the most important parts of Elio’s backstory is that he accepts what happened between him and Oliver. After listening to his father’s iconic monologue, Elio takes time to reflect and process the loss of his first love.
A few months later at Christmas, Elio is stunned by a call from Oliver announcing his engagement. The two avoid what they really want to say until Elio tells Oliver that his parents know about them. Oliver dropped his cold, business-like tone and assured Elio that he had remembered everything. Although Elio was heartbroken at the moment, he smiled, reassuring him that it meant as much to Oliver as he did.
“Film is a mirror and a filter of reality.”

Marzia may not be very explicit about Elio’s gender and his relationship with Oliver, but she is observant and knows Elio very well. She implies that he has something to hide from her, and she is afraid it will hurt her. When Elio asked her if she was hiding herself, she said no and corrected herself. This little interaction reveals a lot about these two characters.
“I like the way you talk. But I don’t know why you keep putting yourself down.”
Elio is a self-deprecating guy and always doesn’t like to show his personality. He’s not confident in who he is, and especially when he’s with Oliver, he seems pretty sure of himself.
During Elio and Oliver’s conversation, Oliver points out that he doesn’t understand why Elio is always putting himself down, to which Elio replies, “So you don’t…” This is the first time Elio has been truly honest with himself. Oliver, marking their turning point in their relationship.
“…our hearts and bodies are given to us only once.”
Mr. Perlman reminded his son that when he was young, he felt this pain would shape him for the rest of his life. “…there is a point that no one observes [your body], and didn’t want to go near it. Now, there is sadness, pain. Don’t kill it, and don’t kill the joy you feel. “
The conversation between Mr. Perlman and his son is one of the most memorable scenes in the film, filled with helpful advice. He also revealed that he had always known about his relationship with Oliver and that without judging him, Mr Perlman advised Elio to live his life the way he wanted. He also reminds Elio that he shouldn’t hold back his emotions because life is fleeting.
“I never had the courage to ask a question like that.”
Perlmans’ appreciation for literature is evident in the scene where Elio’s parents read Marguerite de Navarre’s collection of short stories Heptaméron (July). “Is it better to speak or die?” Mrs. Perlman read it aloud and Elio replied, “I would never have the courage to ask a question like that.”
His parents didn’t know what he was thinking, but his father assured him that he could talk to them at any time. Of course, Elio wondered how he would tell Oliver how he felt. Finally, he mustered up the courage to tell him.
“If only you knew how little I know about important things.”
Oliver compliments Elio about how he seems to know a lot, but Elio feels like he doesn’t know much. No matter how smart he is, he realizes that he’s actually not as smart as some people think him to be – at least, not in a significant way. For example, he doesn’t know what to do with his romantic relationship with Oliver.
That quote says a lot about Elio’s growth—not everyone admits their flaws so openly. In fact, to some extent, this statement contradicts itself. Elio can act on emotions when it really matters, and that’s something he’s worried about and embarrassed about.
“We gave up so much to heal things faster than we should, that we went bankrupt at 30 and every time we started with someone new, we had less what we have to offer.”
Elio’s father was a wise and educated man, but he waited for the right time to show his intelligence. This indicates a high level of emotional intelligence. When he believes Elio is ready to hear it, he tells him that he should allow himself to feel the pain of losing him: “…so that I don’t feel anything lest I don’t. what to feel – what a waste!”
Mr. Perlman took the time to convince Elio to accept his feelings instead of trying to dismiss them. When Elio cries at the end of the credits, the audience sees Elio heeding his father’s advice and accepting his experience.
“Later!”
One of the funniest lines in the movie is “Later!” He throws things so often that Elio even mocks him for it. When Oliver didn’t show up, he first mentioned it by accident at dinner.
Elio mocks his American demeanor, showing that he cares more about his father’s students than he shows. It also shows more clearly the contrast between Oliver’s background and the environment Elio was accustomed to in Italy.
“Nature has ingenious ways to find our weakest spots when you least expect it.”
Again, Elio’s father seemed to understand his son better than Elio himself. Perhaps to comfort him, or simply to enlighten Elio, Mr. Perlman assured him that “nature” would always find people where they were weakest.
Elio begins to withdraw more at the beginning of the film than when he realizes he loves Oliver. So he has a weakness, but he doesn’t realize it until later in his journey.
“Call me by your name, and I’ll call you by mine.”
One of the most poetic lines in the film, also the one that makes up the title, is the one that summarizes Elio and Oliver’s relationship. When Oliver asks Elio to call him by name, he’s basically saying that they’ve become so attached to each other that they can’t get any closer.
Their identities were now inseparable, and they knew each other so well that they changed their names. At the end of the film, Elio still calls Oliver by his own name.
