What crime is 12 Hours of Despair based on?

12 Hours of Danger follows an armed criminal who imprisons his family and forces his mother to drive him through a night of barbaric violence and terrifying plots. This story is similar to that of Gary Lee Quinlivan, who was eventually found guilty of second-degree murder, first-degree murder, and first-degree kidnapping.

His crimes began in Washington state in 1963, when Joan Marlatt broke up with her then-boyfriend Quinlivan, who was unhappy. To get in touch with his ex-girlfriend who lives with his mother, he enlists the help of an acquaintance, Fritz Donahue. According to reports, Quinlivan accidentally killed his friend when he fell to the ground and his gun exploded.

An autopsy revealed the following:

“[Donahue] died of a gunshot wound to the head, with a horizontal wound, the facts are consistent with a gun held at shoulder level and fired directly at the deceased.”

Quinlivan then flees into the woods and outside Patricia Jean Jaque’s home, where he makes her drive him around. This affects the plot of 12 Hours of Despair. The following is an excerpt from the film’s synopsis:

“Val agrees to take Denny wherever he wants and becomes his reluctant partner when he goes on a rampage to save them and her husband Mark (David Conrad) who is going home. anytime. Despite the heartbreaking events, Val develops a relationship with his captor and uses it to save the lives of witnesses, himself and even his captor (2023).

The Last Dance, Last Chance, and Other True Cases: Crime Reporting, Vol. 8 also includes a disturbing account of the event. Gina Gershon told KTLA 5 the situation:

“That moved me… I was so tired of reading the news about another deadly murder. It makes me sad to think that these kids go to school and may never leave school. It’s just terrible; America has failed as a civilization and things are not getting better.”

Lifetime will launch 12 Hours of Despair on February 25, 2023 at 8:00 p.m. EDT. It will also be available for viewing the next day.
