12-Year-Old Boy in Stolen Forklift Leads Police on Hour-Long Chase, Hits Multiple Parked Vehicles

A 12-year-old boy has been placed in juvenile detention after he stole a forklift and led police on an hour-long chase in Michigan.

The boy, identified only as an Ann Harbor resident because of his age, stole a Construction Genie GTH-636 telehandler at Forsyth High School on Saturday, the Ann Arbor Police Department said Monday.

Authorities also said the boy hit ten parked vehicles during the pursuit, which happened after officers responded to a call reporting an attempted truck theft and found him driving the vehicle — which weighs up to 35,000 pounds — “with no lights on.” at 6:48 p.m

“Multiple officers initiated a pursuit of the vehicle at speeds of 15 to 20 mph with emergency lights and sirens activated,” police said. “During the pursuit, the driver of the stolen vehicle traveled through the Georgetown Boulevard neighborhood, striking approximately ten parked vehicles.”

The police stopped chasing the boy after 30 minutes while he was driving over the M-14 bridge.

“At that time, Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office deputies took over the pursuit and followed the vehicle until the driver stopped at approximately 7:53 pm in the area of ​​M-14 and Gotfredson,” police said.

There were no injuries during the chase, the Ministry confirmed.

According to the department, the boy unlocked the vehicle with keys hidden in the cab and was taken into custody after a chase before being placed in a juvenile detention center.

“This was a very dangerous situation that could easily have resulted in serious injuries,” the police added.

A criminal investigation into the event is underway.

The Ann Arbor Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for additional details.
