160 Passengers Evacuated After United Flight Rolls Off Runway and Tilts to the Side

A plane had to be evacuated early Friday morning after it skidded off the runway at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), United Airlines Flight 2477 skidded onto the grass after landing at the airport around 8 a.m. The flight departed from Memphis International Airport, carrying 160 passengers and six crew members, the Associated Press reports.

Videos taken at the scene and shared further xex-Twitter, showed off one of the plane’s wings just feet from the grass as it leaned to one side.

“After landing in rainy conditions, United 2477 exited the taxiway onto a grassy area. All passengers were bussed to the terminal and our team assisted them with their onward connections and other needs,” United Airlines told PEOPLE in a statement.

IAH confirmed on x that no one on the Boeing 737 was injured after the incident. The Houston Fire Department and Houston Airport Operations also assisted in the evacuation, according to the airport.

“United Airlines is working to remove the aircraft, which is not affecting flight operations. Flights to and from IAH are continuing without interruption,” their announcement explained.

Passenger Mike Allard told KTRK he heard a “huge noise” before the plane tilted.

“It seems like we veered. The plane was going a little too fast and it just skidded. That’s how I understood it. I’m glad everyone’s okay. I think the Lord was with us and protected us,” Allard said.

He told the newspaper that he was a pastor who had traveled to the area to conduct a funeral. After the incident delayed him, one of his associates had to step in.

The National Transportation Safety Board has announced x that he is “sending a team to investigate the runway trip on Friday.” The FAA will also investigate the incident.

Friday’s events come a day after United Airlines Flight 35, bound for Osaka, Japan, had to divert to Los Angeles after a tire fell off the plane. The flight departed from San Francisco International Airport and there were no reports of injuries.
