A man has died after being attacked by a shark while fishing off the coast of Mexico, authorities said.
The 22-year-old man was searching the water for scallops at Playa Tojahui on Dec. 29 when he was attacked by the animal, according to a Spanish-language post he shared on X Sonora Civil Protection Unit.
The victim, identified in local reports as Víctor Alejandro Soto García, suffered a significant wound on his left leg from a bite believed to have been caused by a great white shark, CBS News reports.
A group of people who were with the fisherman pulled him out of the water and tried to revive him, but to no avail, according to Yahoo! News of Australia.

A number of fishermen helped bring the victim’s body back to the dock in Yavaros, a fishing port in Sonora, announced the Civil Protection unit.

The victim was a free-diving fisherman who was not wearing a shark bracelet at the time of the attack, the agency added.

This was at least the second, if not third, fatal shark attack in Mexico in a month. On December 2, a 26-year-old mother was allegedly attacked while swimming with her 5-year-old daughter near the coast of Melaka.

Two weeks later, a Belgian man died after allegedly being attacked by either a shark or a crocodile in the waters off the Mexican resort of Zihuatanejo on the Pacific coast. A woman was also injured in the attack.
The Sonora Civil Protection Unit is asking fishermen to take all appropriate precautions when in water.
