22Gz And Ron Suno Were Removed From Rolling Loud New York At The Request Of NYPD

New York’s Rolling Loud event reportedly canceled three drill rappers scheduled to perform this weekend. The identities of 22Gz, Sha EK, and Ron Suno have been removed from the lineup at the request of the NYPD. The rappers were disqualified for linking their music to the violent genre. The three-day event will take place on September 23, 2022 at Citi Field in Queens.

Rolling Loud previously canceled performances by drill rap artists in New York due to pressure from the NYPD. Due to public safety concerns, acts like Pop Smoke, Casanova, Sheff G, 22Gz, and Don Q were banned in 2019.

Why are drill rappers kicked out of Rolling Loud New York?

The announcement comes just a day before the Rolling Loud New York Festival. One of the three drill rappers pulled from the lineup, 22Gz, ceased operations in June. The rapper is accused of being involved in a shooting that took place in March 2022. According to their attorney, the other two rappers, Sha Ek and Ron Suno, have no criminal history.

Sha EK’s rep told XXL in a statement:

“Sha Ek is not happy with the decision of the New York police. In defense of that decision, he has not been charged with anything. The police are trying to connect what he did to violence and hatred. They don’t realize the fact that he’s only 19 – the musician and performer is trying to get ahead and support his family.”

Then he said:

“This year, Sha Ek performed all over the Northeast. His shows are filled with children dancing and having fun. He is looking forward to expanding his travel agency and proving the police wrong.”

Ron Suno allegedly got into a fight at a Rolling Loud concert in New York last year. Diamond Brown, his manager, questioned his decision to cancel the Times interview. He asks:

“How can a guy with no criminal history or gang ties – a young man who has never even recorded a villain song – be denied the opportunity to perform in his hometown his scent after all his efforts?”

What exactly is a rap drill?

Drill rap is a popular but controversial genre of hip-hop music that emerged in the early 2010s on the streets of Chicago. The music has been popular in the United States for over a decade, thanks to the popularity of rappers like Chief Keef, Lil Durk, Lil Reese, Fredo Santana, and Young Chop, among others. The lyrics of drill music are often aggressive, unpleasant, and nihilistic. The songs have a more harsh tone, with mocking lyrics that focus on the aggressive side of street life.

Jayquan McKenley, an 18-year-old drill rap artist, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Brooklyn in early February 2022. At the time, NYC Mayor Eric Adams condemned the drill rap genre, arguing that that’s part of the cause of the rise in gun violence. He described the subcategory’s association with gun violence as “alarming.”

Adams told reporters afterwards:

“The problem is that violent people use rapping rehearsals to announce who they’ve killed and then provoke the people they’re going to kill.”
