53 People Evacuated After American Airlines Aircraft Slips Off ‘Snowy’ Runway in Rochester, New York

An American Airlines flight skidded off the runway at New York’s Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport around 4 p.m. Thursday, forcing 53 people to be evacuated from the plane.

The plane was traveling from Philadelphia and skidded after landing due to snowy weather conditions.

None of the 50 passengers and three crew members on American Eagle Flight 5811 were injured.

“After landing safely at Rochester (ROC), American Eagle Flight 5811, operated by Piedmont Airlines with flights from Philadelphia (PHL) to ROC, went off the taxiway while in transit to the terminal due to snowy conditions at the airport,” he said. American Airlines in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

“Safety is our top priority and we apologize to our customers for their experience,” they added. “All passengers disembarked safely and were taken to the terminal by bus.”

The passenger who did not want to change the seat for his family, said that his mom stole it, threw the bag in the aisle when she went to the bathroom

American Airlines also said the plane would be towed off the runway and undergo a full inspection.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also provided PEOPLE with a statement confirming that none of the passengers reported being injured during the incident.

“American Eagle Flight 5811 skidded off the runway after landing at Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport in New York at approximately 4 p.m. local time on Thursday, January 18,” they wrote.

“Embraer E145 took off from Philadelphia International Airport. There are no reports of injuries. The FAA will investigate. Contact the airline for further information.”

According to a Fox Weather report, at least one of the runways at the Rochester airport — which has three runways — was temporarily closed while crews tracked the plane.

Meanwhile, a passenger who was on the plane shared a video and a picture on social media.

“My @AmericanAir plane just landed off the runway and into the grass at @ROCAirport. Happy Landing,” an individual wrote on X(formerly known as Twitter), along with a photo of an airplane on grass that was covered in snow.

The same X user then shared a video of passengers exiting the plane down metal stairs as numerous firefighters stood nearby.
