69-Year-Old Woman Dies After Crashing Into Walmart Following Medical Emergency

A woman died after suffering a medical emergency and crashing into a Walmart in Newton, Kan., on Friday.

Wanda Hoyle, 69, crashed her car into the vision center of a local superstore, according to a Newton, KS police press release on Facebook. Authorities said the woman had a medical emergency, causing Hoyle’s vehicle to crash into the Walmart midway. No one else was injured in the accident.

She was found pinned inside the vehicle. Newton Fire Department and EMS personnel arrived at the scene and pronounced Hoyle dead at the scene, 12 News reported.

Following the incident, the convenience store was evacuated due to “structural damage to the building,” the Newton, KS Police Department said in a Facebook post. “City of Newton code enforcement has ordered the building to remain closed until the building is evaluated by a structural engineer.”

The Newton Fire Department shared that after an inspection of the building with Newton Engineering and Walmart engineers, “the building has been deemed safe and turned over to Walmart management.”

The Newton Walmart then announced after closing the store’s vision center and pharmacy that the store would reopen at 6 a.m. Saturday. “We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused by the closure,” the Newton Walmart said in a Facebook statement.

Walmart also released an additional statement: “We are heartbroken to learn what has happened. We will continue to work closely with local law enforcement as they investigate this incident,” NBC KSNT reports.

Representatives for the Newton police and fire departments did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for more information on Friday.
