90 Day Fiancé Introduces Sam and Citra: Inside Their Celibacy Struggles, 'Drug Past' and Daddy Drama

30-year-old American Sam lives out of his car — but his Indonesian fiancee Citra is just four days away from moving in… and so is her father

Fiancé of 90 days season 10 introduced a brand new couple.

On Sunday night, viewers met Sam, a 30-year-old who lives off his car. He fell in love with Citra, a 26-year-old from West Java, Indonesia.

Sam shared how he overcame years of addiction to painkillers. He reflected on being a “really cold, numb person” throughout his addiction, which began when he was 15. But his troubled past in the “dirty, ugly world” of drug abuse didn’t push Citra away.

Of course, the other couples also had time to shine. Nikki and Justin argued about his previous sex life and some potential overlap with his current relationship. Rob’s friends condemned him for his virtual infidelity – shocking him by taking Sophie’s side. And Nick upset Devin’s American family with his affectionate (and offensive) nickname for her.

Although their relationship was mostly virtual, Citra and Sam met in person – and got engaged – before she moved to America.

What viewers haven’t seen before is the fresh dynamic between Sam and Citra — and some 90 days the tropes of the relationship are already visible.

Sam’s opening piece gave insight into the depth of his addiction and his decision to find sobriety around the age of 22. With almost 10 years of sobriety behind him, Sam is preparing for his fiancee, Citra, to move to America.

At no point in their relationship did Citra judge Sam. “She has the most beautiful, open heart,” he said of his fiancée. “She still looked beyond all that and, like, loved me when I didn’t love myself. No one has ever believed in me like she does.”

However, this does not mean that their relationship has reached all levels in the 3+ years that they have known each other. The pair hadn’t had sex—not for Sam’s lack of trying.

He said he likes “a nice big butt”, like Citra has. “I’ve been dreaming for so long about grabbing that ass and just, like, slapping it,” he said.

They have already met in person, but Citra’s culture forbids her from having sex before marriage.

“We kissed and all that, but in Muslim culture you can’t have sex until marriage,” Sam explained to the cameras. To make a point, Citra’s cop dad comes to America with her… just to make sure she doesn’t have any funny business.

“It took a scare from her father to keep that from happening,” Sam added. “There’s just something like, ‘I love you like a son, but I’m going to fucking kill you.'” Due to his father’s insistence on their celibacy, they will be racing to get married in just two weeks, so he has proof of marriage.

Citra’s religion is a deal-breaker in her relationships. She gave Sam an ultimatum: convert to Islam or I can’t continue the relationship. “It’s very important to my family,” she said to the cameras.

Sam’s upbringing was quite the opposite. His mom was a Christian, and his dad doesn’t believe in much – except life elsewhere. “He’s a deep believer in aliens and he’s just waiting to be picked up,” Sam said.

Personally, Sam became an atheist in adulthood. “I’m nervous because I definitely think it’s going to be hard to live up to the strict things they have to live by,” he said, citing no alcohol and ritual fasting as concerns about his conversion.

The teaser for next week’s episode showed Citra arriving in America. Everything seems to have started well when the couple meet again in a tearful goodbye at the airport. But whether her father’s arrival will spoil the mood remains to be seen.
