Laura Cassiday of Baltimore, Maryland was walking her dog when a feral cat approached them. She continued walking and returned home with a stray cat closely following her. Once she got inside, the cat started scratching and meowing at her front door for help.
It was a cold, rainy day and Laura was late to work, but she couldn’t leave the cat in such a state. She had never seen a cat before so she decided to take a closer look. “She was old, skin and bones, covered with fleas. Her coat is faded and dirty. Laura told Love Meow: ‘Her mouth looked rotten and sore, and her steps were wobbly and crooked.

The drunk cat begged for food and a warm bed. There was no way she could refuse this cat, so she quickly prepared the room with a warm bed, a box of wet food, and a bowl of fresh water. She named the cat Bones, befitting her condition. Bones quickly devoured her food and purred his thanks.
Laura has experience with elderly cats when she recently adopted Thomas, a 26-year-old old cat. “I really didn’t want to add another cat to my miserable pack, but she insisted, and I refused to bring her back outside in that condition.”
To help cover her medical bills and find her a permanent home, Laura contacted the Cat Rescue Association. She volunteered for the rescue and knew that Bones would get the care she needed.
The rescuer has agreed to cover the costs and Laura says she will raise Bones until she finds a permanent home. After discussing the cat with her neighbors, she learned that an older cat had been in the area for years. She was accepted into the TNR program, but now it looks like she wants to live inside. In such a state, Laura did not think she would survive the winter outside.
Bones was estimated to be 10 years old and weighed only 5 pounds when she was found. “We were treating a urinary tract infection and the vet suspected hyperthyroidism. Today she was given some fluids, as well as antibiotics and anti-arthritis medication,” recalls Laura. Bones showed off her best behavior at the vet, even dozing off on the exam table.
She will continue to receive the care she needs and live with Laura until a new family comes to adopt her. The cat knows who to follow home for help. “What should I do when a cat in such bad shape literally follows me home? I’m so glad she’s off the streets and finally getting the care she needs. “
