A Guide to Change or Update Outlook Account Password

Changing or updating your email account password is one of the important steps in keeping your email account secure. Also, it is important to choose a strong password that is not easy for others to guess.

If you haven’t changed your Outlook password in a while, it could be risky. Maybe you’re not doing this because you don’t know how to change your Outlook password. It is not that complicated and by reading further, you will find methods to change your Outlook account password.

Methods to change your Outlook password

Method 1 – Change your Outlook.com password

  1. Go to the Outlook Live page to start the password change process and click ‘Sign in’ you see in the top right corner of the screen.
  2. You will be redirected to the login page, enter the email address or phone number associated with your Outlook account and press ‘Next’.
  3. You then need to enter your account password and click ‘Login’.
  4. After logging into your account, you will see your inbox along with additional information. Hover over the top right corner and click your profile name.
  5. You will see three options: my profile, my account, and sign out. Click on ‘My Profile’.
  6. At the top, next to the ‘Your data’ heading, you will again see three options. Click the one that says “Change Password.”
  7. To change your Outlook password, you must first confirm your old password and then click ‘Sign In’.
  8. You will then be asked to verify your identity, click on the recovery email address you see.
  9. Now enter your full email address to get the code and after entering click ‘Send Code’.
  10. Enter the code you received in your recovery email address and click ‘Confirm’.
  11. You will be taken to a page where you need to enter your current and new password and then press ‘Save’.
  12. That’s all; your outlook password has been changed successfully.

Method 2 – Change Outlook Client Password

If you have changed your email provider’s password, you should also update it in your Outlook email client.

If you’re subscribed to Office 365 with monthly updates, follow these methods to do so:

  • Launch the Outlook application, click ‘File’, then click ‘Account Settings’, then click ‘Update Password’.
  • There you can update your password in Outlook and click “OK”.

If you subscribe to Office 365 with semi-annual updates, have Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, or 2010, or purchased Outlook as a standalone program, follow these steps:

  1. Start Outlook, click ‘File’ and go to ‘Account Settings’. In the dropdown menu, click ‘Account Settings’ again.
  2. Next, select the email account you want to change the password for, then select ‘Change’.
  3. The Change Account window will open where you can update your password.
  4. Note: POP and IMAP accounts will not offer this option, in which case go to File > Account Settings > Manage Profiles. Click Email Accounts and select the email account for which you want to change the password. Then click ‘Change’ and update your password in the Change Account window.

  5. Click ‘Close’ after Outlook has confirmed your account settings, then Finish > Close to return to Outlook.

Important:

If you use Outlook from your Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, Apple, Outlook.com, or @me.com accounts, you can’t use your regular password to set up these accounts. They may require two-factor authentication plus an app password.

It is a one-time password that you must enter instead of your normal account password when you first set up your account.

Method 3: How to change Outlook data file password?

You can even set a password for your Outlook Data File (PST) so that if someone tries to access the file, they will be prompted for the password. To change the Outlook data file password, you will need to enter the original password to open Outlook. Here are the steps you need to follow to update your password:

  1. Click the ‘File’ tab, then click ‘Information’. The ‘Account Information’ window will open.
  2. Then click ‘Account Settings’ and select ‘Account Settings’ again to open the settings window.
  3. Click on the ‘Data File’ tab which will display information about the Outlook data files.
  4. Select ‘Outlook Data File’ and click ‘Settings’ to open the data file settings window.

Click on the ‘Change Password’ option and enter your old password. Then enter the new password twice. You cannot enter a new password without entering the old password.
