On their 17th wedding anniversary, American actor Robert Downey Jr. sent a sweet tribute to his wife Susan. On August 27, the 57-year-old actor took to Instagram to reveal a never-before-seen photo of the couple on their wedding day, which was held in traditional Jewish style. He captioned the photo as follows:
“Today we celebrate the 17th year of absolute marital happiness. Susan, you are my backbone, cornerstone and lucky star all rolled into one.”
Several friends and family members congratulated the couple in the comments section of the post.

Susan and Robert Downey Jr. they first met in 2003 while working on the film Gothika, which was produced by the latter and directed by Joel Silver. She was the vice president of Silver Pictures, and her big success was the film Gothika, in which Halle Berry also starred. The producer told Harper’s Bazaar that she wasn’t “even slightly” intrigued by the Iron Man actor, but felt he was “weird.”
Susan recalled an incident after meeting Robert:
“We were in Montreal preparing for Gothika and had lunch with the director and Halle Berry. Everyone else got Japanese, but Robert informed us about the ‘superfood’ oatmeal. Sam packed his packets of oatmeal for lunch. And he had this box full of different plants and everything. Then he started practicing those yoga exercises. He was intriguing but strange.”
The couple started dating and quickly fell in love. They were married in 2005 in Amagansett, New York. Susan is also credited with helping Robert Downey Jr. overcome his drug addiction. The producer of Sherlock Holmes allegedly offered the actress a choice between himself and drugs. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar in 2009, she said:
“This won’t work.” I made it clear that nothing can happen if you stay with me.”
After Susan’s ultimatum, Robert stopped at a restaurant along the Pacific Coast Highway and dropped the narcotics he was carrying into the water.
“I believe he noticed what we have. Something wonderful was happening there, something we couldn’t touch with our fingers. He often claims that when we got together, we became that third entity that none of us could be alone, and I believe him.”
While discussing his experience with The Things news site, Robert Downey Jr. claimed that his wife helped him solve his dark past.
»I suppose the only explanation is that I have become more and more like her. I’m still trying to figure out what went wrong. No matter what I craved when I met Susan, I had no idea how much more people would wonder about what I got.”
Robert Downey Jr. and Susan welcomed a son, Exton Elias, in February 2012, after getting married in 2005. Two years later, in November 2014, the couple welcomed their second child, a girl named Avri Roel. However, this was not the first time that Robert Downey Jr. married. From 1992 to 2004, he was married to singer Deborah Falconer. Indio Falconer Downey is the name of the former couple’s child.
