- Builders in Oklahoma City have proposed a building that, if completed, would be the tallest in America
- It will be 1,907 feet tall in honor of the year Oklahoma officially became a state
- The skyscraper is part of a larger development called The Boardwalk at Bricktown that will span three acres
- Currently, the tallest building in America is One World Trade in New York, which is 1,776 feet tall
New York may soon lose its bragging rights to having the tallest building in the United States — and to an unexpected destination.
In an AO press release issued Friday, the company revealed its plans to expand an Oklahoma City building already under construction to become the tallest building in America.
The company is teaming up with real estate developers Matteson Capital to bring the 1,907-foot building to life in an up-and-coming neighborhood called Bricktown. Both AO and Matteson Capital have requested a variance from the city that will allow them to build outside of current zoning restrictions and officially build the nation’s tallest building in Oklahoma City.

The skyscraper’s height is a nod to the year Oklahoma officially became the 46th U.S. state, 1907. It will be called the Legends Tower and stand among three additional 345-foot structures.
Along with the three buildings, the base of the Boardwalk development in Bricktown will offer “a vibrant retail and restaurant scene with more than 110,000 square feet of space,” according to the release.

There will also be 1,776 residential units available at the site, ranging from affordable apartments to luxury apartments. The entire development will span three acres and two million square feet, and its location will be in close proximity to the Bricktown Canal and the Oklahoma River.

The tallest building in the United States is currently One World Trade Center in New York. It opened in 2014 and sits at 1,776 feet, marking the year the Declaration of Independence was signed.
The city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates is home to the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, which towers over the desert city at 2,716.5 feet. Oklahoma City’s Legends Tower would officially become the fifth tallest building in the world if completed.

Scot Matteson, chief executive officer of Matteson Capital, said in a statement, “Oklahoma City is going through a significant period of growth and transformation, making it well-positioned to support major projects like the one envisioned for Bricktown.”
“We believe that this development will be an iconic destination for the city, further stimulating the expansion and diversification of a growing economy, attracting investment, new businesses and jobs. It is a dynamic environment and we hope to see The Boardwalk at Bricktown as the pride of Oklahoma City.”
