NCPCR asks Netflix to stop streaming ‘Bombay Begum’
In 2021, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) issued a notice to Netflix to stop streaming the web series Bombay Begum (2021) starring Aadhya Anand. According to NCPCR, the web series shows the consumption of cocaine by minors. The children’s rights agency issued the notice after a Twitter account reported that the web series showed drug abuse by minors. Sharing a screenshot from the web series, the user said:
From the normalization of minors indulging in casual sex, we now have web series showing minors using cocaine. A screenshot from Mumbai’s Begus shows a 13-year-old girl snorting coke as the party she attended was all about alcohol and drugs (sic). “
In a notification sent to Netflix, NCPCR said,
The Commission will not allow Indian children to be portrayed and glorified in this manner on any media platform/Internet/OTT etc. Netflix should take extra precautions when streaming any content involving or for children and topics should also be avoided. Therefore, you should investigate the matter and stop streaming the series immediately and provide a detailed action report within 24 hours. , failing which the Committee will be compelled to take appropriate action under Section 14 of the CPCR (Commission for Protection of Child Rights) Act, 2005. ”
