Weapons license case
On October 12, 2019, Inspector Ashok Singh, then in-charge of Mahanagar police station, lodged an FIR against Abbas Ansari. In the FIR, it was alleged that Abbas obtained gun licenses from Lucknow and then transferred them to Delhi where he purchased many weapons. Charges were filed against him on December 24, 2020. A court later issued an arrest warrant for Abbas on charges of fraudulently procuring multiple weapons on a single weapons license. Abbas did not appear in court despite various summonses being issued against him. The MP-MLA court even extended his arrest three times but due to his repeated absences, the MPMLA court Special ACJM Ambrish Srivastava declared Abbas an “absconder” and issued Section 82 of the Criminal Procedure Code against him on the request of the police. The court also issued a notice to seize his property, a non-bailable arrest warrant and a surveillance notice against him. Although Ansari applied for anticipatory bail, the court did not grant it. In rejecting the application, the court stated,
Considering the serious allegation that the respondent-applicant fraudulently registered a weapons license and obtained a large number of prohibited barrels, weapons and cartridges on the pretext of shooting; he purchased weapons and cartridges which were prohibited for use in shooting practice and violated the notification of the Government of India dated August 4, 2014. “
The court further stated,
Furthermore, this Court does not find any reason to grant anticipatory bail to the accused-applicant considering that he has been avoiding the proceedings of the court where notice was issued. ”
On March 18, 2024, he was released on bail by the Supreme Court.
