At the height of ABBA’s career, degrading comments about Agnetha Fältski’s appearance did not escape her.
IN ABBA: THROUGH TIME, documentary about the Swedish band that premiered on Saturday, May 11, viewers can watch the remarks Fältskog faced while talking about her struggle with fame.
In 1977, ABBA achieved huge success during their Australian tour. Although the group loved their fan base, they admit in the documentary that sometimes it was a little too much.
“After a while it’s not funny anymore,” said Fältskog, now 74.
Then Fältskog also became objectified in the media – and she had no say in that.

I read somewhere that you are the proud owner of an award that declares you the lady with the sexiest butt”, asked the journalist in a clip from an old TV interview. “Is that true?”
“That’s not surprising. He won’t ask Agnetha about music,” Germaine Greer, author A female eunuch he said in the documentary.
Ingmarie Halling, who did costume and make-up for ABBA, added: “I think it was undignified to refer to any person as a body part.”
Elsewhere in the documentary, Fältskog was vulnerable about her struggle with fame after becoming a mother. Fältski shares daughter Linda Elin, now 51, and son Peter Christian, now 47, with ABBA bandmate Björn Ulvaeus.
“It happens a lot — you start your career at the same time you want to be a mother,” Fältskog said of facing “big, big” problems because she doesn’t want to leave her behind while on tour. “It’s hard work and you always go back to bed knowing that she wants me and that ABBA wants me and it’s very hard to do it all.”

Ulvaeus, now 79, added: “When we came back [from touring] the daughter did not recognize us. It was a difficult experience.”
Fältskog and Ulvaeus divorced after seven years together, but managed to stay with the band and keep things professional until ABBA officially broke up in 1982. At the time, Fältskog admitted that it was too difficult to keep the band going.
Then, in 2022, the band made a rare red carpet appearance together for the premiere of their virtual concert series, which was in support of the band’s studio album A journeytheir first release in 40 years.
