dispute
War of words with Anil Kapoor
In 2010, Abhay skipped the promotion of the film Aisha because the film was a failure. In an interview, he spoke about this and said:
As I was filming, I realized that the film was more about the costumes than the actual acting. I’ve even read movie reviews praising these clothes. Today I want to say that I will never act in a movie like Elsa in my life. This was not the movie I wanted to make. “
Later in 2010, actor Anil Kapoor spoke to Karan on Koffee about Abhay and said he needed help.
Protest T Series
In 2014, he received a black eye at the Screen Awards for protesting against music label T-Series for not releasing music from his film One by Two. Deol said music labels like T-series want musicians to sign a contract that contains restrictive clauses for the latter, which is why he believes this encouraged One By Two’s composers not to sign such an agreement. In an interview, T-series clarified the confusion and said,
We regret to inform you that we have decided to relinquish the musical rights to “One By Two”. Although we own all rights from Viacom, we are unable to release this music album due to the absence of a valid link agreement between Viacom and the album’s composer (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy). ”
Bollywood celebrities praised for their gaze in Fair Cream ad
In 2017, Abhay got into a fight with Sonam Kapoor after she criticized some Bollywood actors on Facebook for appearing in a Fair Cream advertisement. In his Facebook post, he quoted actors Shah Rukh Khan, Vidya Balan, Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor ), Sidharth Malhotra and Shahid Kapoor. Responding to the Facebook post, Sonam highlighted that Abhay’s cousin Esha Deol also appeared in a similar advertisement.
Abhay doesn’t get much attention at award shows
In 2020, he shared a post on Instagram revealing that he and Farhan Akhtar were not considered for the awards show, while Hrithik Roshan was considered for the lead role . He wrote in the post,
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, released in 2011. Now I need to recite this title to myself every day! This is also a great watch to use when feeling anxious or stressed. I would like to mention that almost all award shows demoted me and Farhan from the main lead roles and nominated us as “supporting actors”. Hrithik and Katrina have been nominated for ‘Starring’. So, following the industry’s own logic, this is a movie about a man and a woman falling in love, and whatever the man decides, he has the support of his friends. ”
Slams movie ‘Raanjhanaa’
In 2013, Abhay said the movie “Raanjhanaa” had a backward storyline and promoted sexual harassment. He shared a message on social media, writing:
@oldschoolrebel9 Clear and effective insights into the movie Raanjhana. History will not look kindly upon this film for its regressive message. It’s been a theme in Bollywood for decades that a boy can (and should) pursue a girl until she relents. Only in the movie does she do this on purpose. In fact, we see time and time again that it leads to some form of sexual violence. Glorifying it on screen only leads to victim blaming, as @oldschoolrebel9 so brilliantly explains. Please take a moment to read her observations in the image above. #shedoesnotlikeyou #growup #gloryfying Sexharrasment. ”
