Paradise Paper: Financial data breach
The Paradise Papers revealed that wealthy and powerful people around the world, including some in India, hid their money in secret accounts in 19 “tax havens.” The investigation, led by The Indian Express and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, focused on big companies and their alleged misuse of offshore locations. In the Abhyuday Jindal case, leaked documents show that in 2013, a law firm asked Appleby (the company under investigation) to appoint Abhyuday as a director of Jargo Investments and Vavasa Investments, two Mauritian companies of the Jindal Stainless Steel Group. However, Appleby expressed concern because, as an Indian, Abhiyudh Jindal was at risk of “round tripping” (tax evasion or money laundering). This relates to a $35 million loan to two Jindal Group companies. In this regard, Abhyuday Jindal clarified that Jargo Investments and Vavasa Investments were once part of the promoter group of Jindal Stainless Steel Limited and no longer hold shares in the company since 2014. The funds raised by these companies are for their own use only and not for Jindal Stainless Steel Limited and are hedged. Use these funds to invest in India. Abhyuday also mentioned that he was a non-resident when these companies raised funds.
