Achara Sachdev

Achala Sachdev is an Indian actress who mainly appears in classic Bollywood films. She is best known for her role as Laxmi Kedarnath, the wife of Balraj Sahni’s character (Lala Kedarnath) in the Bollywood film “Waqt” (1965). She is also popular for her role as Simran’s grandmother in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995).

Acharla started her career as an actress in 1938 with the Hindi film “The Fashionable Wife”. Next, she appeared in Bollywood films such as “Rahi” (1952), “Sabse Bada Rupaiya” (1955), “Sampoorna Ramayana” (1961), “Dil Ek Mandir” (1963) and “Sangam” ( 1964). In 1965, she became popular for her role as Lala’s wife in the Bollywood film “Waqt”, in which the hit song “Aye Meri Zohra Jabeen” was based on her.

Her best known works include Mera Naam Joker (1970), Daag: A Poem of Love (1973), Chandni (1989) and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995).

In her career that spanned approximately 74 years, Atchara acted in more than 250 films. The last film she acted in was Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003). Achala plays a cameo in the film.

After the death of Achara’s husband Clifford Douglas Peters, she lived alone in Pune. On September 8, 2011, she slipped and fell in the kitchen, breaking her leg. Following the incident, Achala was admitted to Pune Hospital and Research Center by her caregivers but was discharged soon after. On October 21, 2011, she was readmitted to the hospital and was diagnosed with multiple embolisms in her brain, resulting in quadriplegia – complete paralysis of the limbs and trunk. The condition further resulted in her becoming completely paralyzed and losing her vision. Achara passed away on April 30, 2012.

  • Achara likes to meditate. After her husband’s death in 2002, Atchara spent much of her time meditating, listening to meditative music, and giving sermons.
  • Five years before her death, Achala donated her Pune apartment to the charitable organization Janseva Foundation. In return, the organization’s founder and chairman, Dr. Vinod Shah, took upon himself the responsibility of caring for her as long as she lived.
  • According to reports, no Bollywood celebrities visited her while she was admitted and undergoing treatment at a hospital in Pune before her death.
