Sharath Kamal was selected in the 16-man training camp during the 2002 Commonwealth Games. This training helped him understand the game, thereby improving his performance. Therefore, in 2002, he qualified for the National Championship finals and became a member of the Indian national team. In 2003, he participated in the national championship and won his first championship. In 2004, he participated in the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships and won his first international medal. As a result, he qualified for the 2004 Athens Olympics. Since then, he has participated in five consecutive national competitions and won the championship each time. In 2006, he participated in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and won the gold medal in the singles TT competition. At the same championship, he won another gold medal in the men’s team competition.
In 2007, Sarat Kamal participated in the Pyongyang Invitational Tournament held in Pyongyang, North Korea, becoming the first table tennis player to participate in the event. In the same year, he participated in the Japan Professional Tour and defeated his opponent Lee Jung-woo of South Korea. Li Zhengyu was ranked 19th in the world when he was defeated by Sharat. In 2008, he participated in the Beijing Olympics and became the only Indian male table tennis player to participate in the Olympics. In 2010, Sarath Kamal defeated his opponent Tomas Kinat of Slovakia in seven games at the U.S. Table Tennis Open Men’s Championship in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and won the championship. In the same year, he participated in the Egyptian Open and defeated his opponent Li Jing from Hong Kong to win the championship. After winning this title, he became the first Indian to win a singles title on the ITTF Pro Tour. During the ITTF Pro Tour, he captained the team and helped the team defeat the tour favorites and nine-time champions England to win the championship.
In 2010, he participated in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi and won the men’s doubles gold medal with teammate Subajit Saha.
The following year, he represented TSV Grafelfing in the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) competition. In the same tournament, he joined forces with Werder Bremen in 2012. In 2013, he joined the German team Dusseldorf, one of the best table tennis clubs in Europe. During the 2016 Asian Olympics, he defeated Iran’s Noshad Alamian in the qualifying round and qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics. However, at the Rio Olympics, he failed miserably in his first race. In 2018, he participated in the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and won the gold medal along with teammates Antony Amalraj, Harmeet Desai, Satyam Nanasekaran and Sanil Shetty won the men’s team gold medal. In the same championship, he won a silver medal in the men’s doubles and a bronze medal in the men’s singles competition with his teammate Shatyam.
In 2020, he defeated his opponent Marcos Freitas of Portugal and won the ITTF Challenge Plus Oman Open Championship. With this victory, he won the ITTF event after a long wait of ten years. On July 27, 2021, Sharat Kamal lost to Chinese player Ma Long in the third round of the men’s singles match at the Tokyo Olympics.

In 2021, he won the gold medal at the 83rd National Adult Table Tennis Championships in India.
On August 2, 2022, Sharath Kamal and his Indian men’s table tennis team defeated Singapore 3-1 in the final of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England to win the gold medal.
