Adele Says Becoming a Mom at the Height of Fame Was Considered ‘Career Suicide’ but ‘I F—ing Got Away with It’

Adele has opened up about becoming a mother at the height of her career, praising herself for overcoming what she says could have been “career suicide”.

The Grammy winner, 35, attended The Hollywood Reporterat the annual Women in Entertainment Gala in Los Angeles on Thursday, where she was honored with the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award. And during the speech, she referred to the knowledge that she was pregnant with her son Angelo, who is now 11 years old, at the height of her fame.

“I could only call it pandemonium because that’s how I felt,” she said, referring to what she perceived as sudden success with her chart-topping sophomore album. “Overnight, it was like I became famous. It was the strangest, most surreal experience of my life to date.”

Getting pregnant in the middle of it, Adele said, “would be — and was considered — career suicide for many.” However, she saw herself as “always a person who goes against the grain.”

“That’s where I decided to reject the lack of success and the idea that you have to be constantly relevant to be successful,” she said. “And that maybe, just maybe, I could be a hit on and off the stage.”

Adele certainly did it. “You’ll never guess what?” I fucking got away with it,” she told a star-studded crowd at the event, including fellow Brit Helen Mirren, who honored Adele with the honor.

Adele concluded by praising “all the sacrifices the women before me made” that allowed her success, saying she couldn’t have done both without them.

“Because of them, I have every right to be the boss at work and the boss at home. So thank you your,” she said.

Adele recalls anxiety over Lady Gaga at her Adele Residency weekends: ‘I broke down the whole show’

Earlier this month, Adele opened up The Hollywood Reporter about the related realities of parenthood. Asked by the media about the story she told on stage about making chicken kabobs for her son’s class, the musician said: “I made it the next day. It went great.”

“I spilled turmeric everywhere, and it stained my whole kitchen,” she added. “I made 60 of them.”

Angelo’s father is the star’s ex-husband Simon Konecki, but Adele has been in a relationship with American sports agent Rich Paul since 2021, and the pair have often sparked speculation that they are married.

Last month, the “Rolling the Deep” singer announced that she had recently gotten married during her close friend Alan Carr’s comedy show in LA

Two followers shared the details with the anonymous celebrity gossip account Deuxmoi. “I was at Alan Carr’s comedy show in LA tonight and Adele was in the audience,” wrote one visitor. “Alan asked the audience if anyone had gotten married recently, and Adele yelled ‘I have.'”

Another fan told Deuxmoi, “When [Carr] he asked if anyone got married recently [Adele] shouted ‘I am’. Super cute all the way around and it was super cute but it got dipped before it was done.”

The star’s representatives never responded to PEOPLE’s request for comment. But back in September, during a residency performance in Las Vegas, Adele referred to herself as Paul’s “wife” while discussing sports. “I’m not the best woman,” she said of Paul – whose clients include LeBron James and Zach LaVine – adding that she struggled to understand and embrace American football.
