Adrien Brody Claims He Wasn't Banned from SNL After Infamous Jamaican Bit But Says He's 'Never Been Invited Back'

Adrien Brody is not banned Saturday night live — at least as far as he knows.

The actor, 51, hosted the show in May 2003 and infamously introduced musical guest Sean Paul, who hails from Jamaica, in a bizarre Jamaican accent while wearing dreadlocks. He never returned to the late-night comedy sketch, but in an interview with Suphe denied that he was forbidden to do so, per se.

“But I’ve also never been invited back, so I don’t know what to tell you,” he said when asked about the show.

Brody admitted that he thinks Lorne Michaels “wasn’t happy that I embellished a little,” but clarified that the show “allowed” him to present the singer the way he did.

“I thought it was a safe place for it, weird,” he said.

In the 40-second intro, instead of the typical script, which would have Brody say, “Ladies and gentlemen, Sean Paul,” Brody repeated a series of stereotypical Jamaican expressions, starting with “Ya mon,” including references to Rastafari and a series of jokes about the musician’s family all called “Sean” iterations. In the introduction, there were also several mentions of an “excellent show” for the audience, which is common for SNL the hosts say.

Brody told Vulture that he pitched quite a few sketches in the run-up to his guest appearance, including an unusual introduction by Sean Paul, and recalled that the cast was “literally blown away when I pitched” the idea.

Brody is far from the only star to make headlines SNL performance. More than a decade earlier, Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor had perhaps an even more controversial moment as a musical guest, as she tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II at the end of her performance of Bob Marley’s “War.”

“Fight the real enemy,” she told the audience after tearing down the photo.

After the stunt, Michaels requested that the “Applause” sign in the studio not be lit and O’Connor was banned from NBC for life. The clip of her tearing up the painting was also not shown in the reruns SNL episode.

He won a Golden Globe for his performance on January 5 and was emotional in his acceptance speech as he greeted his “beautiful and amazing” girlfriend Georgina Chapman, saying: “I wouldn’t be standing here in front of you if it wasn’t for you.” He also credited his parents, who were with him on the show, as he said they “always kept me up.”

“This story is really a character’s journey that is very reminiscent of the journey of my mother and my ancestors fleeing the horrors of war coming to this great country and you know, I owe so much to my mother and my grandparents for their sacrifice,” he added. , talking about his character’s history as a Hungarian-born Jew who escaped the Holocaust.
