After Russell Brand Reports, Police Now Investigating ‘Non-Recent’ Allegations of Sexual Offenses in U.K.

Authorities are investigating multiple allegations of sexual misconduct they have received since the allegations about Russell Brand were made.

Earlier this month, the UK outlet The Sunday Times and Channel 4 Dispatches published reports documenting allegations of rape, sexual assault and abuse by four women against the 48-year-old Brando.

The Take him to the Greek The actor and comedian pre-empted the reports by denying them on social media, saying he “absolutely denies” the claims, which he called “extremely outrageous and aggressive attacks”.

On Monday, the Metropolitan Police’s Scotland Yard confirmed in a statement that detectives had launched an investigation into allegations of sexual offences. They did not mention Brando by name. No arrests.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, said in a statement: “We continue to encourage anyone who believes they may have been the victim of a sexual offence, regardless of how long ago it was, to contact us.”

“We understand that this can seem like a difficult step to take and I want to reassure you that we have a team of specialists available to advise and support,” Furphy said.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police previously said they had not received any formal complaints made in relation to the reports. They were in contact with news outlets “to ensure that any crime victims they spoke to were aware of how they could report any criminal allegations to the police.”
