Agam Kumar Nigam is an Indian singer known for singing sad songs. He is the father of popular Bollywood playback singer Sonu Nigam.

Agam Kumar Nigam was born in 1947 in Agra, Uttar Pradesh (age 76 in 2023). At the age of five, he moved to Faridabad with his family. After completing his studies in Faridabad, he moved to Mumbai in 1968 to pursue his dream of becoming a playback singer.

In an interview, Agam Kumar Nigam talked about his relationship with Shobha and said that they met through an 11-day live concert. He said he was initially unhappy with her becoming his partner because she was a part-time singer. However, after the 11-day concert, they became very good friends and eventually fell in love with her. In an interview, he spoke about this and said:
After 11 concerts, I realized that this was the girl I wanted to marry. It’s like a new chapter for us seamlessly. When we came back we were even more attracted to each other. “

Agam Kumar Nigam started his singing career as a stage artiste in his teenage years. Initially, he sang in small shows like Rameela in his hometown and other stage shows. In 1968, he moved to Mumbai to pursue his dream of becoming a playback singer. However, veteran singers such as Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Mukesh dominated the industry at that time, making it difficult for Agam to get roles as playback singers. Therefore, he began to perform in orchestras and stage shows, but without major success.
The singer later moved to Delhi where he worked as a stage artist for nearly eighteen years. He revealed in an interview that he once visited his hometown in Faridabad near Delhi. At that time, a popular singing show called ‘Khushrang Deshara’ was held in Delhi in which popular singers from Punjab like Surinder Kaur, Asa Singh Mastana and Narendra Chanchal performed. He said that he was also invited by the organizer to participate in the exhibition. He performed on the show and received huge praise from the audience. Thereafter, he decided to move to Delhi and continue working there.

Agam Kumar Nigam released his debut album Uski Yaadon Mein in 2002, which contained eight songs. However, the album failed to make a splash in the music industry. In 2004, he released his second album “Bewafaai”, which contained nine songs. The album was well received by listeners and marked a breakthrough in the singer’s career.
In 2007, he released the album “Phir Bewafaai”, which was the second series of his album “Bewafaai”. Other series from the album “Bewafaai” include “Woh Bewafa” (2008), “Bewafaai Ka Aalam” (2010), “Phir Se Bewafaai” (2015) and “Bewafa Dholna” (2019).
He has sung several songs in the album Pyar Kisi Se Na Karna (2009) with Tulsi Kumar and Sonu Nigam. In 2012, he sang the song “Beta Chhutal” with Omkar Singh and “Choliya Ke Taanka” with Rekha Rao for the Bhojpuri film “Hamaar Saiyan Daroga”.

- He was awarded the Bharat Gourav Ratan Award at the “Meri Awaaz Suno” exhibition organized by Kala Darpan Society, Delhi.
- He also received the award on the occasion of “The RDD Show”‘s 1,000th episode.
Facts/Trivia
- He wanted to be a singer since he was a child and started singing at the age of 4 in small shows like Ramleela and other stage performances.
- In the initial days of his singing career, he often traveled for several hours and performed for Rs 25.
- In an interview, he revealed that when he was 15 years old, he ran away from home to Mumbai with his friend Balkishan Dhawan, looking for opportunities to sing in playback. However, the singer later returned to his hometown and eventually moved from Faridabad to Mumbai in 1968, where he continued his singing career.
- In March 2023, Agam Kumar Nigam’s house in Oshiwara was robbed worth Rs 72 lakh. He complained to the Oshihara Police Station. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the money was stolen by Rehan, the singer’s former driver. However, the police later recovered Rs 70.70 from the accused and booked him under sections 380 (theft), 454 (trespass) and 457 (housebreaking).
