Airline to scrap all flights from popular UK airport next year

A MAJOR airline is to ax all of its flights to the popular UK airport from next year.

Lufthansa currently flies to 11 different airports in the UK, but will be scrapping all of its routes to Liverpool from next year.

The German airline will only start flights between Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Frankfurt in May 2022.

However, this route has been canceled since February, despite the increase in the number of flights between the two airports already this summer.

In May of this year, Lufthansa doubled its offer to six routes a week, flying every day except Saturdays.

The Liverpool Echo reports that the “unavailability of Lufthansa aircraft” led to the decision.

They claim that “the airline is facing maintenance work on part of its fleet”.

A Lufthansa spokesperson told Sun Online Travel: “Lufthansa is continuously evaluating and optimizing its entire route network.

“Due to unplanned maintenance work on the Pratt & Whitney engines in the Lufthansa Airbus A320neo fleet, Lufthansa Airlines will have significantly fewer aircraft available next year than originally planned.

“The company has therefore decided to suspend some routes from February 2024 that have not shown positive economic development in recent months.

“One of the routes affected by this suspension is Frankfurt – Liverpool. Lufthansa regrets this decision.

“The cancellations will be published in the reservation systems on 19 December 2023 and passengers affected by the cancellation will be notified.”

A spokesman for Liverpool John Lennon Airport said: “We are of course very disappointed to hear of Lufthansa’s decision to suspend its Frankfurt service from Liverpool.

“We will continue to work with Lufthansa to ensure the return of this important connection as soon as possible, once the aircraft availability issues have been resolved.

“This route is strategically important for the city region because of the global connectivity it brings and we will continue to explore opportunities to better connect the city region.”

The route appears to be popular with travelers who reacted to the news on social media.

One wrote: “Is this a @lufthansa joke? They should reduce the number of flights to/from Manchester to allow flights from Liverpool airport to operate!”

Another simply wrote: “Gutted!”

Those wishing to travel between the two cities will now have to travel to Manchester instead of Liverpool to make their journey.

The airline flies daily between Frankfurt and Manchester, with multiple flights in both directions each day.

Lufthansa also offers daily flights between Manchester and Munich.

The airline also connects Germany with Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Birmingham, Bristol, London Heathrow, Gatwick, City and Stansted.

In the meantime, this airline has launched new flights from a small British airport.

And these are all the small British airports to which Ryanair flies next year.
