politics
When his father’s health deteriorated, Ajit Singh returned to India. Lok Dal is a political party founded by Ch. In the early 1980s, Charan Singh was on the fringes of a faction. Ajit Singh had returned from the United States at that time to maintain his family’s legacy in peasant politics. In 1986, he entered politics by joining the Lok Dal and serving as its general secretary. In the same year, he became a member of the Upper House of Parliament. After a long illness, his father died in 1987, but before his death, he appointed Ajit Singh as party president and Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna as acting president. This arrangement could not meet the demands of party members, and the number of party members began to decrease. In 1987, the Lok Dal split into two factions, the Lok Dal (A) led by Ajit Singh and the Lok Dal (B) led by Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna.
In 1988, Ajit decided to merge the Janata Party with the Janata Party and became the chairman of the newly formed Janata Party. The merger upset many party members and Ajit subsequently faced strong opposition in the 1989 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections. The PPP won that election. Vice President Singh proposed the appointment of Ajit Singh as minister and Mulayam Singh Yadav as deputy minister, but Mulayam rejected the proposal and proposed a vote to decide the leader of the winning party . In the voting, Mulayam Singh got 115 votes and Ajit got 110 votes. A 5-vote lead prevented Ajit from becoming the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. Later, he became a member of the lower house of parliament and Vice President Manmohan Singh installed him in the cabinet as industry minister; he served in the ministry from 1989 to 1990.
Ajit Singh, known for taking major steps to help sugarcane farmers in western Uttar Pradesh, had proposed reducing the circle distance between sugar mills from 25 km to 15 km. From 1989 to 2009, he won six general elections in the Baghpat constituency and served successively as Minister of Industry, Minister of Food, Minister of Agriculture, and Minister of Civil Aviation.
During his political career, Ajit Singh played a crucial role in forming alliances with different political parties to form a coalition government. He once said of the coalition government,
“पहलेगठबंधननीतियोंकेआधरपरबनतेथे, अबजरतिके आधरे र पर बनते है। हम इन जरति, धर्म, भषर की विविधतरओं को क म करने की कोशि श नहीं कररहे है बल्कि और बढ़ा कर अप फरयदर कर रहे है। ऐसे लोकतंत्र करमयब नहीं हो परी ै।”
He has only lost two general elections, first in 1998 and second in 2014, both times by BJP candidates. After being defeated in 1998, he founded a new political party, Rashtriya Lok Dal, in 1999. The decision bore fruit and he won again from the Baghpat seat, joining Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s coalition government and serving as the agriculture minister in the cabinet. He introduced a credit-linked subsidy scheme to expand cold storage capacity, thereby boosting investment flows.
