Who was Albert Woodfox?
Woodfox was a writer and Black Panther activist from the United States. He is known to have spent 45 years in prison, including 43 years in solitary confinement.
His mandate is the longest in American history. He became known as one of the “Angola Three” because he was incarcerated in the Louisiana State Penitentiary (also known as Angola).
Why was Albert Woodfox arrested and put in solitary confinement?
Woodfox was accused of murdering a prison officer named Brent Miller in 1972, for which he was convicted and sentenced to prison.
Although no forensic evidence was found against him, he was sent to prison, and even the witnesses against him were declared unreliable for a long time.
According to his memoir “Solitary”, he was gassed, brutally beaten and strip-searched. He was released in February 2016 after being found not guilty of murder charges in 1972.
