In the US state of Washington, a 28-year-old daredevil lost his life after colliding with the ground while trying to break the record for the longest jump on a motorcycle ramp. According to authorities, Alex Harvill was killed Thursday morning during practice.
At the Moses Lake Airshow, he intended to attempt a 351-foot (107-meter) jump in front of spectators. Video from the event shows the driver’s motorcycle crashing into a dirt hill after missing its intended target.
The Columbia Basin Herald, a local newspaper, said Harvill was apparently thrown off the handlebars and lost his helmet in the accident.
Organizers of the Moses Lake air show initially reported that Harvill was taken to hospital with injuries, but a police spokesman later confirmed that he had died.
According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, “We extend our deepest condolences to Alex’s family, friends and loved ones.” She had spent the previous two weeks practicing for the feat, but she had yet to jump the ramp until her first attempt on Thursday, according to her wife, Jessica, who was at the air show with her children.
A professional motocrosser, Harvill also holds two previous records for motorcycle jumps. He had a day job on a farm and cited Evel Knievel, a stunt double, as one of his influences.
His growing anticipation for the latest record attempt was documented in Instagram photos and videos of the ramp’s construction. Harvill said in an interview with the event’s promoters last month that he has always loved motorcycles and he spent his childhood jumping off the sand dunes where the Moses Lake air show was held. The 28-year-old was married and his wife had just welcomed his second child into the world.
When Farrelly was a player for the Philadelphia Independence in the now-defunct Women’s Professional Soccer League in 2011, the alleged harassment began.
While Farrelly was a member of the Portland Thorns, he told the website that the abuse continued. Shim, a previous Thorns player, was also allegedly the target of harassment. When Riley was fired, the Thorns said they investigated the allegations against him and forwarded those findings to the league.
According to Riley, the allegations are “completely false.” The league was stunned by the allegations, leading to the cancellation of this weekend’s games. The NWSL Players Association expressed its hope that the decision would be accepted and supported by the public.
