Now, Social Media Homicide will reveal the horrifying story of how Mason repeatedly beat Alex with a wrench in a remote wooded area for fear their sexual relationship would be discovered.
Online, Mason began communicating with 15-year-old Alex and began sending him graphic images. Later, the relationship turned into a sexual relationship.
In the weeks leading up to her death, Mason bribed Alex into keeping the secret for fear it would become public. And on December 12, 2019, Mason drove Alex to Ashley Woods near Altrincham after picking him up at her house.
The Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School pupil was later murdered by him in what Chester Crown Court described as a “repeated violent attack with a blunt weapon”.
He spent around an hour with Alex’s body before dumping it in the woods and leaving himself without a trace by going out for a pint with friends.
Mason was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 28 years in prison before the Parole Board will consider his release. The minimum sentence was reduced to 26 years after he appealed.
A documentary examining the role of social media in the case will be screened this week. In it, Alex’s friends, family and experts will talk about what happened more than two years ago. Tonight, April 29, at 10:30 p.m., the program is on ITV1.
