Aleksandar Shevchenko News
On Monday, world number three Daniil Medvedev defeated his friend and fellow Russian Alexander Shevchenko 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 to reach the fourth round of the Madrid Open. Before they finally met in person last year, the Russian team played online games together for six years.
Their match, which lasted two hours and 42 minutes in the Spanish city, was their first meeting between them. For the first time in Madrid, Medvedev, who openly admits to having struggled on clay, got off to a slow start but eventually showed his talent to win back-to-back matches.
Shevchenko, who had been playing long before the match, converted her third break point in the first game before making another break to take a 4-0 lead.
However, the 22-year-old was too eager to win the first set, giving second seed Medvedev a chance to rally. At 5-2, Shevchenko missed two set points and Medvedev broke and consolidated to put more pressure on the world number 96. When his 27-year-old compatriot failed on the third attempt, the qualifier finally won the first set.
The fight with the spectators in the Caja Mágica seemed to excite Medvedev, who had a hard time winning points with his serve. Medvedev put his palm to his ear to cheer up the crowd.
In the first game of the second set, the 2021 US Open winner had two break points before breaking himself to secure a 3-0 lead. In the next game, Shevchenko had five break points, but in the end Medvedev prevailed and held after regaining pace, serving for the third set.
With a drop shot, the young player made the break for 2-0, but Medvedev immediately retaliated with the same move, and Shevchenko once again failed to consolidate after the break for a 4-2 lead. As Shevchenko began to cramp, Medvedev conceded a break to leave the second seed serving for the match after saving three break points to tie it 4-4. Shevchenko saved a set point, but Medvedev won with a forehand winner to advance to the round of 16, where he will play either Aslan Karatsev or Alex de Minaur.
