Alexis Morris News
No. 3 LSU defeated No. 2 Utah 66-63 on Friday night in Greenville, South Carolina, to advance to the Final Eight of the NCAA Women’s Tournament for the first time since 2008. Within ten seconds, Alexis Morris made two free throws.
With 4.7 seconds remaining, the Utes had a chance to tie the score at 64-63, but Jenna Johnson, a free-throw shooter who averages over 75%, missed both of her shots. Utah’s Dasia Young had her hands on the rebound when LSU’s Sa’Maya Smith grabbed it.
Morris made two more free throws to extend his lead to three points. While the Utes still had a chance, Young’s 3-point attempt from the left corner hit the side of the backboard as time expired. LaDazDazhia Williams led LSU with 24 points, while Angel Reese finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds for her 30th double-double of the season (31-2). Morris scored a total of 15 points.
For a spot in the Final Four, coach Kim Mulkey’s team will compete against ninth-seeded Miami on Sunday night. In the Greenville 2 Regional, the Hurricanes defeated fourth-seeded Villanova and the nation’s leading scorer, Maddy Siegrist, 70-65.
Since reaching the Final Four 15 years ago, LSU hasn’t progressed as much. Mulkey is in his second year as the Tigers’ head coach. Williams, a fifth-year grad student who previously played at South Carolina and Missouri, excelled in the paint, making 11 of her 14 shots and finishing within one point of her career high.
Utah (27-5) was led by Gianna Kneepkens with 20 points. Second-team AP All-American Alissa Pili scored 14 points but attempted just eight shots as LSU kept the ball away from her. Reese and Morris helped the Tigers quickly build a 13-6 lead.
